The ICS (international citizen service) volunteers of UK and Nepal are actively working on some of the remote VDCs of Nibuwatar and Aaamvanjyang of Makawanpur. They are actively working on the sector of youth motivation, awareness raising, Income Generation activities, and construction of hand washing station and latrine for the needy one, health sanitation, drinking water project and many more. Their hard effort and successful implementation brings joy to the rural communities of Nubuwatar) and Aamvanjyang.

Saraswoti Gautam (45), who is both mentally and physically disable, lives in a village of Bagdali with her two sons and a daughter after the death of her husband 9 months earlier due to illness. Her oldest son Dipendra (18) broke his leg while playing high jump in school and is struggling with his broken leg with steel on it so can’t walk properly for last 16 months. Her daughter Durga Gautam (16) is a brilliant student of Grade 10 in Jalpa Secondary school, Dumrekuna in scholarship of Share and care Nepal. The eldest son Dip (3) just started his Montessori at nearby Government School in free of cost. This family totally lacked basic sanitation and no latrine facilities until now. So, they were forced to use others toilet. Lack of toilet and poor sanitation frequently caused them to fall sick from different waterborne illness and fecal-oral transmitted diseases that are usually preventable. Their family members were frequently burdened by the diarrhea, cholera, dysentery and many more but were not able to make the latrine due to financial problem as well as lack of man power in home.

So, ICS volunteer choose that family to construct latrine and hand washing station by providing necessary Material and manpower. Now they don’t have to do open defecation and use the others, no more sanitation problem and hope it will solve their illness problem as well. This brought a vast different in their life. “This is the most precious gift to us in 2016. We are very much thankful to the ICS volunteer and supporting organization for managing latrine in our own home. Now I don’t have to walk with my broken leg, my disable mum should not go to the others. Latrine not only bring sanitation, it brings safety and dignity in our family, now I don’t have to worry about the safely of my sister and little brother. We are very happy” told Dip. Durga add “It saves our time, our self respect. We have less fear of wild life and other insecurity problem as a girl. Especially I would not have to problem during my menstrual period.”

There are other more families like Saraswoti’s in Nibuwatar and Aamvanjyang where people are living in below the poverty line with very poor condition of sanitation and Hygiene. There is no way these families could have built a toilet or hand washing station. We are able to support for 28 toilets (construction and maintenance) 1st year from the project of ICS, funded by Raleigh Nepal and social facilitation by RADO Nepal.
